Repair isn’t always possible, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Where a structural iron member — a veranda post, a load-bearing bracket, a support carrying real weight — has corroded to the point of losing its integrity, safety has to come first, and that element needs replacing or reinforcing regardless of its heritage value. Where components have already broken off, rusted through, or gone missing entirely, they need to be remade. And where an entire piece has been left to corrode for so long that little sound metal remains, restoration reaches its practical limit.

Even here, though, the goal on a period home should be replacement in kind — recasting or reforging to match the original pattern — rather than substituting a modern off-the-shelf product. A missing section of lace can be recast from a surviving piece; a corroded post can be replicated. The character is recoverable even when the specific piece isn’t, which is a very different thing from tearing out sound original iron unnecessarily.

Why Painting Over Rust Is a Bad Idea

One of the most common mistakes with rusted metal is simply applying another coat of paint.

It may look better temporarily, but the underlying corrosion remains. If rust is not properly removed and treated, the coating can eventually bubble, crack and peel again. Paint can also hide deterioration, making it harder to identify how quickly corrosion is progressing.
