Wrought Iron Chair

Making what’s old new again

This rusty old bench came to us in such a dilapidated condition that it looked due for the scrapheap.

Although commonly referred to as wrought iron, the seat is in fact made from cast iron. This cast iron is made in England by the famous Coalbrookedale foundry in Shropshire.

During the restoration process we had to repair the breaks and cracks in the cast iron. We also had to recast the missing pieces in bronze and weld them onto the original cast iron sections.

After doing all the repairs, we stripped the seat back to bare metal, then primed and repainted using only Australian paints.

We re-slatted the seat using class one Australian Blackbutt timber treated with marine grade sealant to reduce future weathering.

All nuts and bolts were replaced with marine grade stainless steel.

It is hard to believe how old this seat really is – it looks brand new!

What we did:

  • Stripped out and replaced timber slats
  • Fully restored cast iron, including bronze-casting replacement sections and repainting.
